James Beutel

Counselling for men, fathers, and partners seeking change, accountability, and healthier relationships.

Most men don't arrive here because things are fine. They arrive because something, be it a look on their child's face, a door slammed too hard, a relationship that feels like it’s falling apart has made it impossible to keep pretending that nothing needs to change.

Perhaps, it was something you felt yourself becoming. Maybe it was the fear that the people you love most are starting to see you differently, or that you're starting to see yourself differently too.

I work with men in that moment. Men who are ready to stop and look honestly at what's happening in their relationships, in their parenting, in themselves. This includes men who use violence or control at home, men struggling with pornography addiction, and men who simply feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from the partner and father they always intended to be.

I have been in the helping profession for over a decade, and since 2019 this has been my sole focus, sitting with men in some of their most honest moments, and helping them find their way back to the person they want to be.

How I Help
I offer a direct yet compassionate working relationship. My role isn't to provide a checklist of advice or tell you how to live your life. Instead, I provide a dedicated space for you to deconstruct the behaviours that no longer serve you. Together, we work to align your daily actions with the person you want to be in your parenting and your relationships focusing on ownership, exploring the ripple effects of your choices, and committing to the long-term work of integrity.

Supporting Fathers & New Parents
I provide specialised support for fathers at every stage of the journey  whether you are an expectant father anxious about the transition, a new parent feeling overwhelmed, or a father who feels he isn't showing up in the way his children deserve. If you worry about your temper, your presence, or the tools you're bringing into your home, we will work together to define your unique picture of fatherhood and build the internal capacity to meet it.

Professional Training
I offer tailored training for organisations and teams working with men who use violence and abuse. Sessions run for approximately 60 to 90 minutes, delivered in person or online, and experiential. Content is shaped around what is most relevant to your context and can draw from the following areas:

  • Understanding DFV perpetrator behaviour — what power and control look like beneath the surface, common patterns of minimisation and deflection, and what genuine engagement with change looks like versus performance of it.

  • Engaging effectively with men who use violence and abuse — practical frameworks for conversations that cut through resistance, build honest rapport, and avoid colluding with harmful narratives.

  • Practitioner positioning in change work — an honest exploration of the assumptions, beliefs, and emotional responses practitioners bring into the room when working with men, and how these can either open or become a barrier to the possibility of change. This includes how to hold hope for men without minimising harm, and how to stay curious rather than certain in the face of challenging behaviour.

An introductory taster session is available at no cost and without obligation. My hope is simply that it adds something useful for your team and opens the door to an ongoing relationship where we can support one another's work — and ultimately, the men and families we are both trying to reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from the first session?
Your Introductory session is a free 30-minute conversation where we get to know each other and see if working together feels like a good fit. You can share a little about what’s brought you to counselling, ask questions, and get a sense of my approach. There’s no pressure to continue, this is about making sure you feel comfortable and supported.

Do you work with all kinds of concerns?
I work with men who themselves have recognised their behaviour has caused fear and harm to those they love. I also provide support to men who want to see freedom from their pornography addiction. If I feel your needs would be better supported by a different professional, I can help you find a suitable referral.

How long are sessions and what are the fees?
Standard sessions are 60 minutes ($180).

Do you offer in-person appointments?
Yes.

How do I book and pay for sessions?
Once you register your interest through my contact form and we arrange your free 30-minute Introductory session, I’ll send you a registration package. This will include the privacy and confidentiality agreement, terms and conditions, and a secure payment link. You’ll need to provide your payment details before the Introductory session, but you won’t be charged for that first meeting. For any future appointments, payment will be processed after each session using the details you’ve provided.

What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a 50% fee, and missed appointments without notice will be charged at the full session fee.

Is what I share confidential?
Yes, what we talk about stays between us, except in rare circumstances where I am legally or ethically required to share information (such as if there’s a serious risk of harm or concerns about a child’s safety). I will always aim to discuss this with you first whenever possible.

What if I’m not sure counselling is for me?
That’s okay! Counselling is not one-size-fits-all. The first session is a chance to try it out and see how it feels, with no obligation to continue.

Do you offer crisis support?
I don’t provide crisis or emergency support. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent help, please contact one of the following services:
